There is no better place to celebrate Valentine’s Day than Broadway, and as the most romantic day of the year approaches, Broadway.com asked readers which current Broadway love song is their favorite. The results are in, and tunes from the hit show Wicked, the long-running favorite Phantom of the Opera and the eternal classic Anything Goes were among readers’ top choices to serenade their loved ones this Valentine’s Day. 1. “As Long As You're Mine” (Wicked) - 35%
In the hit show Wicked, the love story between the outsider Elphaba and the dashing, young prince Fiyero is anything but smooth. The couple faces many barriers in the relationship including his engagement to her friend Glinda, Elphaba’s status as an enemy of Oz and his job in the Wizard’s army. However for one brief moment, the lovers come together to express their mutual feelings with the song “As Long as You're Mine,” which celebrates the idea of living in the moment with the person you love.
2. “All I Ask of You” (Phantom of the Opera) - 18%
Phantom of the Opera’s love triangle offers a bevy of beautiful songs, but fans' favorite Phantom tune comes at the end of Act I, when Raoul and Christine escape from the Phantom’s prying eyes to declare their love for each other with “All I Ask of You.” The Tony-winning musical recently celebrated its 10,000th Broadway performance.
3. “It’s De-Lovely” (Anything Goes) ) - 9%
Cole Porter’s “It’s De-Lovely” first appeared in his 1936 musical Red Hot and Blue, but in 1962 it was added to the revival of his popular show Anything Goes as a duet for Billy Crocker and his love Hope Harcourt. Now, 76 years later, the song is just as sweet, playful and romantic as it was when it first premiered.
